Historic Hannibal Tours is located at 323 North Main Street in the historic "Tom Sawyer Diorama" Museum building, next to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home complex at the corner of Main and Hill Streets.
The "Diorama" building, as it's known by local Hannibalians, was originally built c1840. During Mark Twain's boyhood, the storefront was the location of McDaniel's candy store; Jimmy McDaniel, son of the store's owner, was a childhood friend of young Sammy Clemens.
Historians and authors Ken and Lisa Marks are proud to share the Tom Sawyer Diorama Museum free of charge to all who wish to visit. A Hannibal tradition for more than forty years, the dioramas are three-dimensional, hand crafted scenes made over a five-year period in the late 1960s by artist Art Sieving. The sixteen dioramas, each measuring 40" x 40" x 30", tell the entire Tom Sawyer story – one for each chapter of Mark Twain's masterpiece of American literature.
Also featured in the Museum are rotating exhibits highlighting the fascinating history of Hannibal, both pre- and post-Twain, including The Unsinkable Molly Brown (born and raised in Hannibal), the real-life story of Injun Joe, Hannibal's Lumber Barons and the Mansions of Millionaire's Row, the Lighthouse dedicated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and so much more!
